Our School

Northern Junior School is situated on the upper slopes of Portsdown Hill and overlooks Portsmouth Harbour and the Isle of Wight. It is set within spacious, attractive grounds that provide a stunning learning environment for children. The school is federated with Northern Infant School, with which it shares the site, and this ensures that there is one learning journey for all pupils.

The school was opened in 1962. It has eight spacious classrooms each fitted with the latest learning technology, a large hall, a multi-purpose community room, award winning school grounds and a well stocked library.

Our links with the local community are of fundamental importance. We have strong community links with the other local schools, Portchester Community Centre, St.Mary’s Church, Castle Street Day Care Centre, Fort Nelson and Fareham in Bloom. The school is also used by a number of community groups as a venue for a range of activities. We also recognise and value the importance of home and school working together and developing vital parent partnerships.

Northern Junior has effective links within the educational community, through partnerships and collaboration with all of the local schools and several external agencies who deal with health, welfare and learning support issues.

We have high expectations and an ethos that centres on teamwork built on a fundamental requirement to sustain a thriving community, which inspires all individuals to achieve their full potential, within a caring and happy environment.

We bring all our levers to bear in order to achieve this – from an energetic and fully focused governing body, through to a tried and tested leadership team, to the recruiting and sustaining of high quality teaching staff, highly motivated support staff – whilst ensuring that differentiation applies in terms of styles, approaches and abilities.

We pride ourselves on our ability to meet the wide and varying needs of our children. Diversity is celebrated. In short, we deal in personalised learning, providing teaching and support for children of all abilities in all circumstances.
